Jane Williams - Head Server and Lay Preacher
Jane Williams - Head Server and Lay Preacher

My name is Jane Williams and I am a commissioned lay preacher and head server. Originally from Yorkshire, I moved to Coventry when I was 18. I came here as a student but didn't complete my degree . Later I went back to university and I have a degree in theology from Durham University. I was brought up going to a Methodist chapel but as my thinking about the Eucharist developed, towards a belief in the real presence of Christ in the sacrament,  I moved to the Church of England. I have been worshipping at St. Mary Magdalen since 2005. I was attracted by the combination of traditional Anglo Catholic worship and inclusive attitude.

I like traditional worship and feeling that I am just the latest in a long line of Christians worshipping in the same way, with the same words through the centuries. I also find the changes to the patterns of worship and the colours we use throughout the year helps me keep focused on where we are in the pattern of the current year.

I explored a vocation to the priesthood and although unsuccessful in that, I discovered a passion, and I hope, an ability for preaching and have continued to follow this calling.  I enjoy exploring the biblical text and understanding the historical context as well as exploring how what they have to say is relevant to us in our context today.

In my day job I work for a learning disability day service, supporting adults with learning disabilities and challenging behaviour to take part in a variety of activities

I married my husband Andrew in 2005. We enjoy watching Coventry rugby, skiing and travelling. I am a chronic bookworm, I particularly enjoy crime, fantasy novels and anything with a theological or philosophical theme. I like anything that is cute and cuddly and have a collection of  teddy bears and other cuddly companions. I like to run to help improve my physical and mental health  and have even managed to complete a marathon. I have stammered since early childhood but I am determined not to let this stop me answering the call to ministry in whatever form that may take.
